If your great grandfather was a brushmaker, you may find this site of interest to you.
http://www.brushmakers.com/  The SBD is a Historical Society/ Family History Society that specialises in the brush/broom making trades and those who have worked therein for the past few hundred years.  The site includes a list of all Brushmakers mentioned by William Kiddier in his book covering c1790-1890.

Sadly no CUMPSTONs there.
