A free grammar school in which the boys of the parish are taught the Latin and Greek lnaguages gratis, the usual number of whom is from 15 to 20, who pay a small quarterage for English, writing etc and about 20 more scholars attend, and others who parents are not resident in the parish ; the salary of the master, arising from houses and lands and annuities amounts to about £43 p.a. ; and about one hundred years ago an estate which belonged to the free grammar school was illegally sold by the trustees of the school for an annuity of £6 though the estate is worth at this time nearly £100 a year and since that period , another estate, worth perhaps £30 p.a. was converted into an annuity of £5.
There were another 3 or 4 schools attended by 50 – 70 children.
