27th March I received a message from Ruth Brandreth
ruthbrandreth@gmail.com ‘ I am looking into my family history, my father was Leonard Edward Compston Sedgley, cousin to Archie Compston again Sedgley. Both had U.S.A contact.’
There is lots of information about Archie at http://www.cumpston.org.uk/#/archie-compston-golfer/4534203071
I see that Leonard Edward was born around 1887 June Quarter to Edward Wones and Rachel in Sedgley Staffs, although one census has this as Wolverhampton. He was aged 3 in the 1891 census living in St Lukes Parish Wolverhampton.
He is shown as dying on 13 June 1930 at Staffordshire. There are also a couple of entries for him arriving in the UK from America – I would love to know more about these!
Back in December 2010 I heard from caroline.dalloway@ntlworld.com who also was related to Archie Compston. She wrote ‘I have researching Archie’s brother, John William Henry Compston. Their father was John Compston born in 1856. Their mother was Mary Ann Partridge. Their Grandfather was Wiliam Compston who married Hannah Wones in 1853. Both John and William Compston appear on the census as being Charter Masters – is this something to do with coal mining do you know?’
