Cope Cumpston found her voice as an activist when she moved to Champaign-Urbana and got heavily involved with a political campaign. With hard work and long hours, it succeeded. She was amazed to find that, unlike Boston or the Bay Area, where she used to live, a smaller community gave her the opportunity to really make a difference. 
Cope took that opportunity seriously. As part of the school board, she helped establish a fair election process. She also helped found the Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign, an advocacy group that provides space and tools for bike repair. Now, as a member of the grassroots Champaign County Health Care Consumers, Cope works to empower people to demand affordable, quality health care.

Catherine Hume Cumpston
CUMPSTON, Catherine Hume “Cappy” Died on January 27 at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana, Illinois. She was born Catherine Hume Maguire on November 23, 1924 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Mary Hume and John MacArthur Maguire. Her sister Nancy Hoffman lives in Lutz, Florida. She attended Shady Hill School and Concord Academy, and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1946. She married Edward Henry Cumpston IV (Harry) on August 4, 1944, and had three children, Mary, Hank, and Cope. Two are living: Mary (Tsipora Bar Rashi) in Israel and Cope (married to Walter Matherly) in Urbana, Illinois. Her husband Harry died in 2006. She has six grandchildren (five in Israel, Sarah Matherly in Urbana, Illinois) and four great grandchildren in Israel. Cappy worked as Development Director of Bennington College, and as a fundraising consultant for Arthur Raybin Associates. She served on the board of directors of the Bennington Museum, and was active in the Garden Club of America. She was a talented singer, and was soloist in a number of church choirs. She enjoyed tennis, skiing, dancing and entertaining. She and her husband Harry lived in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont, and retired to Naples, Florida. BLOOMINGTON – The Occupy Bloomington-Normal movement protested outside a campaign fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock on the east side of Bloomington on Friday night. The private event featured former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Illinois State senior Kelby Cumpston said the group protested because they believe there’s too much money going into political campaigns.
