At the time of the 1881 census, the Dominion government of Canada found itself managing an increasingly populated and productive nation. Canadians and newly arrived immigrants were beginning to migrate towards the Prairies which offered enormous tracts of inexpensive and reportedly productive land in which to start a new life.
