The “Atlas of Family Names in Ireland” is a very interesting new project.
The researchers have transcribed all the names from Petty’s 1659 census of Ireland. They are now in the process of mapping the current distribution of Irish family names in order to assess their geographical expansion, and the role of migration and urbanisation. The long-term intention is to produce a book though it seems that they still have some way to go. Full details of the project can be found here:
